Family therapists are trained and experienced in couple work (whether there are children or not). Maggie specialises in a mentalisation-based approach, a short term method (usually 4-12 sessions) which helps couples explore the difficulties in their communication.

These difficulties, which can become entrenched patterns of relating to one another, can lead us into angry exchanges which can easily escalate in very distressing ways.  Alternatively, we can avoid talking about difficult things in order to prevent this happening.  However, that can lead to difficulties not being resolved and over time a lack of closeness can build up, affecting all aspects of our relationship, intimacy and also our sex life.

If these patterns can be identified and interrupted, differences and difficulties can then be thought about in calmer ways, enabling each partner’s real intentions and fears to be better understood. This sensitive and non-blaming process promotes  mutual understanding, intimacy and future resilience.
